Survey of Italian Literature II
Description
During the lectures, the main development tendencies in Italian literature from the end of the 19th century up to the middle of the 20th are discussed. Students get acquainted with the major authors, their literary production and the tendencies of literary genres and trends in this period. The mainstream themes characteristic to the single authors are analyzed as well as stylistic and linguistic aspects. In addition, the polemic issues related in particular to the literary Italian language and to the influential historical periods and literary trends are discussed.

Literary Verismo of G. Verga, L. Capuana, F. De Roberto, comparison with Emile Zola’s naturalism. Decadence and G. D'Annunzio's novel Il piacere. Futurism and Surrealism ((F. T. Marinetti, A. Palazzeschi, M. Bontempelli, A. Savinio, A. Delfini). Notion of Modernism ((L. Pirandello, I. Svevo, F. Tozzi. C. E. Gadda). The return to order (G. A. Borgese, La Ronda). New Realism: 1) la narrativa meridionalistica (V. Brancati, C. Bernari), 2) mythical and symbolic Realism (E. Vittorini, C. Pavese), 3) existential realism (A. Moravia), 4) neorealism and (B. Fenoglio, P. Levi). La linea del fantastico modernista (D. Buzzati, E. Morovich, T. Landolfi, A. M. Ortese).
Assesment Criteria
Use and systematically analyse business Italian, its individual phenomena (terms, other lexical and functional features of official and business writing) and its business content.
