    Horizon : Studies in Phenomenology
Despite their creativity, cultural actions are not established out of nothing. They are based on previous actions, their passive or active memory, and extension. Sedimentation is the depositing of sediments that occurs during certain processes. They testify to the processes that have taken place and themselves become significant links or traces. Different layers of sediment are formed, which testify to past events, which have structures in the present. The best-known phenomenological concept of sedimentation was formulated in Husserl’s text The Origin of Geometry. Husserl uses the specific geological term of sedimentation to describe the science of geometry as a linguistically (written) mediated genesis of conceptual knowledge. The human practice of knowledge can be transmitted to other generations only by expressing it linguistically and recording it in writing. Derrida used the phenomenological concept of sedimentation and created Grammatology. The main idea of documentality is that a particular kind of social objects, namely documents (records of social acts) are the ground of social reality. For all three philosophers, writing or recording becomes a model for reflecting on cultural-social reality. The purpose of this article is to discuss the writing as a model for cultural sedimentation and memory. Husserl understood writing as a sedimentation that must be reactivated. However, Derrida and Ferraris identify the written objects only with materialized writing and the repetition of what is written. They do not distinguish between imitative and comprehensive reading.

Organic farming uses management practices that would avoid the use of chemical inputs and minimizes damage to the environment and wildlife. Thus we are brought significant restrictions on synthetic chemicals used in obtaining food products. The method involves different practices aimed at protecting the environment, maintaining and enhancing soil fertility, obtaining unpolluted and high quality agricultural products, and at last, promoting sustainable agricultural development. Romania has a great opportunity for organic farming as a result of natural conditions. However, Romania is located behind other EU or world countries. The present study shows the empirically based growth rate, of organic agriculture needed by Romania to reach in year 2025 the level of other countries. For comparison and calculations were considered France (one of the major players in the market of organic products) and Lithuania (that also has a well-developed organic agriculture). The results show that the current growth is not enough to overcome the first half of the top EU countries and requires an acceleration of this process of transformation into organic.

The paper is produced based on the authors’ research “Assessment of the Introduction of the Rural Development Programme 2007–2013 Activity “Local Development Strategy” by the Partnership of Rezekne District Communities and Proposals for its Further Development”. Research on the activity of local action groups (LAGs) and their influence on the overall development of regional territories became urgent in recent years, given the implementation of the European programme LEADER. The research object of the paper is a LAG – the Partnership of Rezekne District Communities – that is located in Latvia, Latgale region. The research aim is to assess the strategy of the local action group. The research employed the monographic and descriptive methods as well as analysis, synthesis, the graphic method, data grouping and a sociological research method – a questionnaire survey. A survey of project submitters identified three major fields in which it is planned to submit and implement projects in the next programming period in the LAG’s territory. They are: promotion of active recreation and sports; reconstruction of the territory; and organisation of and contribution to cultural events. The surveyed residents agreed with the following assertions regarding their lifestyle: an enhanced surrounding environment and natural, cultural and other significant historical objects foster tourism; the establishment and functioning of youth centres contribute to useful spending of leisure time by youths and their communication; the availability of sport and fitness equipment and of sports grounds increases local residents’ interest and wish to practise a healthy and physically active lifestyle. Based on the data acquired and the interpretation of findings, proposals were made for the further development of the territory as well as the research methodology was explained for the purpose of carrying out analogues research studies in the future.

State support is a major determinant for efficient farm activity that contributes to an increase in the efficiency and quality of production, and contributes to the increase of competitiveness and modernization of agricultural sector. In this paper, the distribution of agricultural subsidies by directions and regions is analyzed. In order to reach the goal and conclude the research tasks the analysis and synthesis of scientific literature, systematization of information, comparative analysis and summarizing methods were used and farm technical efficiency (TE) was calculated. The analyzed period in the given research were 2010–2014, based on primary data collected from corporate farms and secondary data provided by the National Bureau of Statistics, and Agency for Interventions and Payments in Agriculture. During the analyzed period, the amount of allocated subsidies to farmers increased, but still are present inequalities in the distributed funds, difficulties in obtaining the payments and lack of transparency. As well, a clear and consistent policy that could be implemented through the allocation of subsides aimed at developing the agricultural sector is missing.
  • Improvement in wettability and lubricity of water/glycerol base fluid by the synergy of nanoparticles (NPs) and protic ionic liquid (PIL) was experimentally investigated. The hybrid additives were made by combining graphene nanoplatelets or silicon oxide nanoparticles with tert-octylamine oleate PIL. A lubricating sample preparation procedure included ultrasonication, centrifugation and magnetic stirring. Kinematic viscosity, pH, and wettability were evaluated. The tribo-tests were performed on a ball-on plate reciprocating tribometer. It was observed that NPs alone could not improve the lubricity of the base fluid. However, the lubricity was substantially enhanced by using the PIL additive. Furthermore, the combination of NPs and PIL provided an even better tribological response. The hybrid additives improved wettability and facilitated composite tribo-film formation

This teaching aid has grown out from the course Introduction into English Linguistics which I have been teaching at Vytautas Magnus University for a number of years. Its aim is to present students with a concise and up-to-date discussion of some of the main topics that mod-ern linguistics addresses. The teaching guide is provided with exercises for each topic (graded from less difficult to advanced), and questions for discussion. All the exercises have been tested in class. The teaching guide also includes a glossary of the most important terms which stu-dents have to know and be able to use not only in this course but also in the other linguistic courses that they take in the programme of English Philology.

This text serves as an introduction to critical analysis of crime fiction in English. After a brief review of the pre-history of crime fiction in English, the principal focus is on sub-genres such as Golden Age detective stories, American noir thrillers, thrillers in general and police procedurals. For each sub-genre a list of characteristics is provided. Some major authors like Agatha Christie, Raymond Chandler, P.D. James, Ruth Rendell, Ian Rankin and Kathy Reichs are given closer attention. In addition, newer trends in crime fiction are discussed. Exercises for students and advice in carrying out research on crime fiction are also given.

  • The idea to write this book primarily came from our intention to share what we have discovered about one of the greatest childhood miracles – play. For a number of years we have explored this phenomenon, yet its profound and extraordinary nature still continues to surprise us. Promotes development and, at the same time, is the greatest achievement of the child. Keeping this in mind, we designed our monograph for a few purposes. First, we wanted to present the results of the three-year project “Development of Self-Regulation in Play” attained in play research laboratory of the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences. Second, we sought for the first time to discuss in Lithuanian language the theory of play based on cultural – historical psychology. Our objective was to formulate and present the key principles of the development of self-regulation through play activities. Finally, we aimed to describe the steps of practical use of joint (adult-child) play activities that help a child to develop a self-regulatory behavior during play. Why did we choose to focus on the development of self-regulation through play activities? Simply that a large number of worldwide studies show (Elkind, 1982, 2007; Singer, Singer, D’Agostino, DeLong, 2008; Frost, 2010) that children’s imaginary play is vanishing and that their imagination and self-regulation skills have deteriorated. Another observed trend is a clear opposition between play and academic learning (Miller & Almon, 2009; Nicolopoulou, 2010). Surveys reveal that currently selfregulation and executive functions are in the center of researchers’ attention worldwide and are among top ten studies in progress. [...]
