English Academic Writing

Description

The purpose of this course is to refine students’ knowledge and skills in English academic writing with a special focus on the requirements set for research in the area of linguistics. Through examination of the most common academic text types and practice, students learn the skills effective academic writing which includes enhancing the English language skills. The focus of the course is on the cultural, genre and register specificities of academic texts. The students are taught to use the methods of corpus linguistics and electronic language resources when analyzing and writing academic assignments.

Aim of the course

The overall objective of this course is to teach students the most important principles and skills of academic English writing and to implement the acquired knowledge in practice.

Course content

Cultural differences in academic writing. Style in academic writing. Punctuation. Genre and register analysis. Paragraph development and structure. Writing an introduction. Writing an analytical part. Writing a conclusion. Writing an abstract. Corpus analysis and academic texts. Summarizing, paraphrasing. The literature review: genre and register perspectives. Citation requirements The overall organization of the thesis/ research article; Planning an essay; Essay structure. Editing and presenting research assignment.

Assesment Criteria

1. Oral presentation of small-scale research on academic writing. 2. Written assignments: paragraph, introduction, theoretical overview, analytical part, conclusions, and abstract. 3. Midterm exam: essay and academic writing editing tasks. 4. Final examination (portfolio).
