European Historiography
Description
The aim of this course is to recognize the nature of history science and its development in Europe from Antique till nowadays. Forms of the studies – lectures, seminars, individual work with literature. Topics of this course – classic and modern historical familiarity conceptions, famous historians and their works. Results to be achieved – students will be capable to perceive the use of the variety of historical research methods and methodology, to find out the significance of historical research, its purpose and impact to the society.
Aim of the course
To get to know and analyze the nature of historical science, its place in the scientific system and its development in Europe from ancient times to the present day.
Prerequisites
The subjects of the first three years of the bachelor's program in history were heard.
Course content
Introduction: historiography - the history of historical science.
Sources of cognition of historiography.
Links between historiography and other sciences and its scientific criteria.
Ancient historiography.
Medieval Historiography: Continuation of Traditions and the Search for Innovation.
Historians during the Renaissance and Reformation movements.
Enlightenment historiography.
The 19th century historiography: from romanticism to positivism.
The 20th c. historiography:
a) a continuation of the traditions of classical historicism;
b) the search for modernists;
c) manifestations of postmodernism.
Historian and sources: Does the historian know "how it really was".
The problem of historical truth
Assesment Criteria
1. Describes historiography as the history of the science of history
2. Describes the development of historiography.
3. The names of the most famous historians and their works are indicated.
4. Formulated and substantiated statements on the topics of European historiography.
5. The relationship of the historian with the sources is analyzed, the multidimensionality of the problem of historical truth is described
