This course engages students in the study of the wide span of important political ideas developed in the twentieth century. Some of the most salient topics include: Liberalism; Marxism and socialism; Conservatism and its modifications; Totalitarianism, its roots, forms, and history; Subideologies: e.g. anarchism, feminism and green ideologies; Paraideology: e.g. nationalism; Mass and elite ideas; Ideas of freedom and equality in the twentieth century; Ideas of human rights; Dilemma of political and moral universality and relativity; The notion of the conflict of civilizations

Dalyko studijų rezultatai

1. to familiarize students with the theories and competing narratives of the history of political ideologies and ideas in the 20th century 2. to contextualize these theories and narratives within their various social and cultural dynamics 3. to chart the very utility (and/or difficulties) of the various political discourses of modernity which appeared in the twentieth century

Dalyko turinys

The growth of Liberalism. Marxism and Socialism. Conservatism and its modifications. Totalitarianism: its origins, forms, and history. Sub-ideologies: anarchism, feminism, and green ideologies. Para-ideologies: nationalism. Mass and elite ideas. The concepts of freedom and equality in the 20th c. The notion of human rights. The dilemma of political and moral univerality and relativity. The notion of the conflict of civilizations.

Dalyko studijos valandomis

Lectures 45 hours, home works 30 hours, individual work 43 hours, examination 7 hours.

Studijų rezultatų vertinimas

Attendance - 10%, written works - 10%, midterm exam– 30%, final exam – 50%
