Lithuanian as a Foreign Language A1

Description

The aim of the course is to teach the students to understand and participate in a simple communicative situation. The students get acquainted with the most important grammar and pronunciation rules; their practical language usage skills are developed and applied on the topics relevant for beginners: introducing oneself and others, describing objects and places in the city, purchasing or ordering food and talking about family. The students learn how to ask and provide essential information on the topics covered in the course and read simple short texts.

Course content

1. Introduction. Lithuanian alphabet. Vocabulary: a) Getting acquainted; b) Numerals 0–10; c) Nationalities, languages. Grammar: a) The verb to be; b) The present tense of A type verbs; c) Nominative and genitive; d) The preposition iš. 2. Me, my family and friends. Vocabulary: a) Members of the family and a family tree; b) Professions, jobs, occupations and hobbies; c) Character, appearance. Grammar: a) The present tense of I type of verbs; b) Accusative, locative and vocative; c) Singular and plural of nouns; d) Masculine and feminine of adjectives (nominative and accusative); e) Adjectives. Matching adjectives with nouns. 3. Food and drinks Vocabulary: a) Foods and meals; b) Ordering a meal in a restaurant/café; c) Shopping and paying for things; d) Numerals 11–100. Grammar: a) The present tense of O type of verbs; b) The past tense of verbs; c) Dative, instrumental, d) The prepositions su, be, e) Politeness phrases with the subjunctive mood; f) Countable/uncountable nouns. g) Accusative of numerals. 4. My home and my city Vocabulary: a) My home; c) Objects and places in the city; b) Asking for & giving directions. Grammar: a) The future tense of verbs; b) Prepositions with the genitive and accusative case; c) The imperative; d) Cases of personal pronouns.

Assesment Criteria

Requirements for the minimal positive evaluation of the course: 1. Can read short adapted Lithuanian texts and shortly introduce oneself in Lithuanian. 2. Can describe one’s family using the most common nouns and adjectives. 3. Knows the most common foods and uses simple phrases to order meals. 4. Uses the vocabulary of the most relevant objects in the city; is able to ask and give directions using the simplest structures.
