Dendrology
Description
Dendrology - a branch of botanical science, investigating the amount, biology, ecology, geographic distribution. Native and alien dendroflora species used in green areas. Identification of broadleaves species by morphological characteristics of leaves, flowers and fruits. Coniferous species recognition by shoots, needles, strobes, cones. Cultivars of green areas.
Aim of the course
To provide competent knowledge of Europe native and alien woody plant species, their biology and ecology, to develop the skills to identify species of woody plants by morphological features.
Prerequisites
Required knowlege of soil science, botany.
Course content
The common part: Dendrology concept; Woody plant taxonomy. Species habitat. Native areal of species. Hardiness zones; Habitus of tree. Crown forms. Ages, height and diameter of trees; Shoots and buds. Leaf form, colors. Flowers and strobilus. Fruit and cones; Shade tolerant and light-loving, tolerance to humidity and acidity, woody plants; Plant phenology; EuroAmerican and Asian dendroflora, used in Lithuania: Pinophyta; Magnoliophyta; Observation and recognition of pheno-phases; Herbal preparation
Assesment Criteria
1. Describe the main terms of dendrology, introduction, woody plant biology and ecology, species habitats, appearance of tree and its parts in a written survey.
2. To recognize edaphic factors and phenology of woody plants in a written survey.
3. To describe the ecology, biology, application of conifers in a colloquium.
4. To describe the ecology and biology of species of broadleaves in a written survey.
5. Identify and characterize plants by morphological features in the survey.
