Kurso metu susipažįstama su gyvūninių ląstelių ir audinių kultivavimu, darbo su gyvūninėmis ląstelėmis in vitro sąlygomis specifika ir pritaikymu biotechnologijoje. Dalyko eigoje įgyjama daug praktinių žinių, reikalingų sėkmingam ląstelių ir audinių kultūrų panaudojimui biotechnologijoje.

The course introduces to animal cell ant tissue culture, specificity of working with animal cells under in vitro conditions and their applications in biotechnology. During this course a lot of practical knowledge, which are necessary for successful application of cell and tissue cultures in biotechnology, will be obtained.

1. Introduction: The use of animal cell and tissue culture.
2. Basic equipment, facilities and chemicals required for maintaining cells in vitro. Aseptic technique
3. Conditions required for cell culture. Growth and maintenance of cells in culture.
4. Characteristics of cells in culture. Cell line and culture monitoring.
5. Contamination of cell culture.
6. Cryopreservation of animal cells. Freezing and thawing cell lines.
7. Initiation of primary cell culture.
8. Three dimensional cell culture systems.
9. Engineering of artificial tissue and organ structures for implantation and research applications.
10. Stem cells, types, properties, possibilities and perspectives.
11. Genetic engineering of animal cells in culture.
12. Hybridomas.
13. Mammalian cell products: established and potential.
14. Production from cell culture. Scaling-up of animal cell cultures
15. Ethical problems of cell culture cultivation, hazard, health care, environmental and human protection.
Practical work (contents):
Rules and specificity of working at a cell culture laboratory. The cell culture laboratory equipment, the consumables, the cell culture media and chemicals needed for cell culture. Sterile handling, maintaining sterility and aseptic technique necessary for cell culture. Subculturing of animal cells growing in a monolayer. Subculturing of animal cells growing in suspension. Initiation of primary cell culture. Growing cells in three dimensional culture. Growing the animal cells in a bioreactor.
Dalyko studijos valandomis
Lectures – 45 hours, laboratory work – 15 hours, individual work – 94 hours, examinations– 6 hours. Total 160 h.
Studijų rezultatų vertinimas
Final assessment sums the assessments of written final examination (50%), assessment of laboratory work (30%), and written mid-term examination (20%).
