Contextual Studies modules are generic to a number of undergraduate design courses, the syllabus content has been devised in this level such that approximately 60% of the material is generic and applicable across design disciplines and 40% is specific to a particular subject area and will be delivered by subject specialists in that area.
The content is structured around four core themes and how they relate to contemporary practice:
Design Practice – Investigation into design activities related to the conception, planning and design problem solving. Design practice focuses on people and process across a range of design disciplines and the concept of multi-disciplinary design.
Design Product – Investigates identifies and emphasises the identity and interpretation of ‘the product’. It also considers the role and significance of ‘the product’ in culture and society. The student considers the ways in which people give meaning to products as objects of contemplation or as objects of function. Reference is made to ecological design and materials sustainability.
Design Discourse - Identifies and develops the student awareness of and skill in the use of language specific to Design research, investigation and design thinking. The theme also introduces an awareness of the distinctions between communication for academic and professional contexts.
Design Reflection – Identifies with and engages in the reality of becoming a professional design practitioner. The core theme focuses on the developing awareness, confidence and ability to articulate ideas through coherent articulation.
