Translation of Specialised Texts
Description
This course is designed to train students’ skills in the translation of specialised texts. During the course, students analyse and translate different types of legal, business, medical, and technical texts focusing on the rendering of structural, lexical and syntactic properties typical of specialised texts from English into Lithuanian. Students learn to properly employ dictionaries, term banks, corpora and search for various sources and technics that would facilitate the process of the translation of specialised texts.

This course aims to introduce students to the specificities and principles of the translation of specialised texts.
Prerequisites
Very good knowledge of English and Lithuanian.
Course content
Genres and classification of specialised texts.
Functional, structural, lexical and syntactic properties of specialised texts. The specificity of specialised terminology.
Peculiarities and principles of the translation of specialised texts. Quality assurance in the process of the translation of specialised texts: the problem related to terminology and adequacy.
Preparation of a specialised text for translation, linguistic expression of cultural differences.
Term bases, specialized dictionaries. Databases of translated texts and their practical application.
Translation of specialised texts of different genres in accordance to the provisions on the translation of specialised texts.
Assessment of the translation variants of different specialised texts.
Assesment Criteria
1. Genres of specialised texts and their characteristic features described in detailed.
2. Structural, lexical and syntactic properties of specialised texts explained.
3. Practical problems related to the translation of specialised texts discussed.
4. The analysis of the source specialised text performed properly and the degree of the complexity of the text accessed.
5. Appropriate tools and sources selected and applied during the translation process.
6. Specialised texts of different genres translated adequately.
7. Translations of specialised texts analysed properly considering the key aspects.
