Teaching English as a Foreign Language Methodology
Description
Teaching English as a foreign language methodology course acquaints students with new developments in language teaching and learning in the digital 21st age. Concepts of multilingualism and plurilingualism and communicative language competence, theoretical principles of teaching and learning linguistic competence (pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary) and communicative language activities (reception (listening and reading comprehension), written and spoken interaction and production, and mediation) are analyzed and opportunities created to apply theory in practice. Analysis of active learning methods, issues of planning, lesson organization, classroom management, testing and assessment are also explicitly discussed. Students are assigned practical tasks, group project work and work in virtual environment. The course is provided in a blended mode (face-to-face and virtual environment).
Aim of the course
To acquaint students with basic theoretical English as a foreign language teaching principles, active learning methods and create opportunities to acquire initial practical learner communicative competence development skills.

English C1 competence.
Course content
Language teaching/learning in the 21st c.: What every teacher should know. Plurilingualism and multilingualism. Teaching language as a system. The choice of English pronunciation teaching model in the context of 21st c. Issues in lexical competence acquisition, development and maintenance. Development of grammatical competence. Issue of fluency vs. accuracy. Active learning methods. Teaching the development of listening and reading comprehension. Teaching spoken and written interaction and production. Teaching mediation of concepts, texts and communion. Teaching the development of listening and reading comprehension. Teaching spoken and written interaction and production. Teaching mediation of concepts, texts and communion. Testing. Feedback. Formative and summative assessment.
Assesment Criteria
1. Defines peculiarities of language teaching/ learning in the digital 21st century.
2. Explicitly explains theoretical principles of learner linguistic competence development.
3. Properly chooses and applies active learning methods in teaching communicative language skills (reception, production, mediation).
4. Teaches simulated communicative language activities according to independently prepared lesson plan.
5. Provides well justified arguments about the observed simulated teaching activities, developing reflective practice skills.
