Spanish A1

Description

The course provides students with A1 level of the Spanish language. It aims to present the learners the basic lexical, grammatical and phonetic peculiarities of the language, as well as to teach them the required oral and written communication skills of the relevant level. The course covers the following: the peculiarities of the pronunciation of Spanish sounds, words, and intonation, word order of the Spanish sentence; formation of declarative, interrogative and negative sentences; introduction to the basic parts of speech; lexical items and structures for the communication on everyday topics. The form of studies includes lectures, seminars, self-study tasks and work with TELL ME MORE programme and in virtual MOODLE environment (on-line work, synchronous and asynchronous conversations and discussion forums, interactive tests and exercises).

Aim of the course

To develop communicative competence, which includes linguistic, pragmatic, and sociolinguistic components, through reception (listening and reading comprehension), production and interaction (speaking and writing) and mediation (translation) linguistic activities at the level of beginners (A1).

Course content

Students acquire competence in Spanish at A1 (beginner) level through the linguistic activities of reception (listening and reading comprehension), production and interaction (speaking and writing) and mediation (translation). The content of the course includes the following main themes for the development of communicative competence: introductions, greetings, farewells, countries, nationalities, professions, family, home, studies, work, leisure activities, food, clothing; and linguistic themes: the rules of the pronunciation of Spanish sounds, words, and intonation; the order word in a sentence; the formation of declarative, interrogative, negative, and exclamation sentences; and the formation and use of basic parts of speech. Particular attention is paid to the use of phonetics and grammatical rules in practice. Mixed methods of study: group work, role-plays, dialogues, analysis of texts, work in the MOODLE virtual environment (synchronous/asynchronous tutorials, discussion forums, interactive exercises), individual work with practical application of the theoretical material.

Assesment Criteria

A student correctly uses lexical units, grammatical structures and pronunciation and intonation patterns corresponding to level A1. A student understands simple texts, dialogues, e-mails, postcard text, simple informative texts. A student understands very short adapted audio and video recordings, simple instructions, phrases and commonly used words related to the basic needs. A student speaks about common everyday topics using very simple phrases. A student asks simple questions on familiar topics about basic needs and answer such questions. A student correctly describes himself/herself and his/her environment; writes a short postcard; fills in simple forms.
