Description

Sound Art: Theory and Practice” is devoted to a comprehensive overview of theoretical premises, artistic practices and stylistic features of sound art. The specificity of sound art strategies, analyzed in the perspective of media culture and contemporary art and multiple intersections of contemporary culture reveals a variety of tendencies of art practices that are based on complex technical approaches (with an emphasis on electronic and digital tools), sonic medium, aural perception and related conceptual paradigms.

Aim of the course

To explore and articulate contexts of sound art by employing lively methods of lectures, by illustrating theoretical material with numerous audio-visual examples, by giving access to a vast horizon of sound art practices.

Course content

1. Introduction to the course, its content and context. 2. The definition, beginnings and history of sound art. 4. Basic Sound editing techniques 5. Sound Installations (Sound architecture of the space and conceptual sound design) I 6. Sound Installations (Sound architecture of the space and conceptual sound design) II 7. The synthesis of sound and visuals: relation and narrative 8. Writing as a creative tool 9. Sound art and contemporary music: history and styles of electronic music 10. Sonic Postcards - Field Recording in Kaunas 11. Project Development I 12. Project Develpment II. 13. Institutional and curatorial sound art strategies: post-institutional collaborative models and networks, new media festivals, sound art projects, sound art in Lithuania 14. Project Development III 15. Summary: sound art in the context of media culture and contemporary art.

Assesment Criteria

1. Understands and explains the theory, development, history and context of sound art. 2. Knows, applies sound art technology, is able to create, plan and perform sound art works. 3. Manages hardware and software sound art tools. 4. Raises creative ideas, implements and presents them.
