History of The Mediterranean Region
Description
The course aims at analysing the history of the Mediterranean Sea region intended as a common anthropological Koine. Discussing the Mediterranean region morphological and climate aspects, its human geography and both social and cultural anthropological expressions the course will focus on their diachronic manifestations. Basing on the teaching of the École des Annales and on Fernand Braudel methodology the development of the most relevant cultural and anthropological expressions in the region (such as migrations, art, agriculture) will be investigated together with the history of their academic research. The course is taught in Italian adopting the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach, therefore great emphasis will be placed on linguistic aspects.

The concept of the Mediterranean: a historiographical survey and problems. The notion of civilization. The relation between the civilization and culture. The “rise”, “development” and “decay” of Mediterranean civilizations. Classical antiquity: Greece and Rome. Middle Ages. The development of Islam civilization. Christianity and Islam: living together, cooperation, confrontation. Modern period and Mediterranean “break ups”. 18th century: towards the new concept of modernity. Africa, the Mediterranean sea and Europe: the phenomena of “modern” identity and orientalism. The formation of national cultures. The nations of the Mediterranean: the formal end of the continuous civilization? A reflection of the Mediterranean sea identities in the life of the Mediterranean sea nations. The Mediterranean sea and 20th c. migration. The process of European integration and the Mediterranean sea. The new role of the Mediterranean sea countries in the 21st c.
