English C1: Reading and Speaking

Description

The course is designed for students who want to improve communication skills in preparation of academic studies in English and anyone wishing to develop general English language communicative competence. Learners will develop a variety of general English language skills: to discuss and debate on a variety of academic and social topics, to improve accuracy as well as further develop their fluency, to develop an ability to vary register according to the context, to practice in guessing the meaning of unknown words and to develop and accurately deliver presentations. The course is based on the plurilingual approach. A blended learning format is applied (lectures, work in the Moodle virtual environment, independent work) along with various active study methods (group and pair work, discussions, text analysis, listening to audio recordings, role-plays etc.).

Aim of the course

To develop general competences, communicative language competences (linguistic ( pronunciation, vocabulary, orthography), sociolinguistic and pragmatic and communicative language activities: production, interaction and mediation (oral and written) at the advanced level (C1).

Prerequisites

Competence in English at B2 level.

Travel and tourism. Living outside the home country, immigration and emigration problems. Professional and amateur sports. Languages and cultures. The Lithuanian language in the world and / or in Lithuania. Multilingualism. Is it enough to know only one foreign language? Languages and employment opportunities. Language registers. Formal and informal language. Structure and vocabulary of oral presentations. Writing a CV, cover letter and complaint. How to choose a profession. University education vs vocational education. Assesment Criteria

1. Skaito, supranta, analizuoja ir kritiškai vertina bendrinės bei akademinės kalbos tekstus, straipsnius. 2. Taisyklingai vartoja C1 lygmenį atitinkančias gramatines ir lingvistines struktūras, bendrinės kalbos aktyvųjį žodyną.. 3. Dalyvauja diskusijose, debatuose, pokalbiuose įvairiomis švietimo, kultūros, sporto, socialinės apsaugos temomis tiek bendrine tiek akademine kalba. 4. Pristato mokslinio tipo pranešimus pasirinkta tematika, vartojant taisyklingą akademinę kalbą, inicijuojant ir palaikant diskusiją su dėstytoju bei kolegomis. 5. Parašo gyvenimo aprašymą (CV) pagal europinius standartus, motyvacinį ir skundo laiškus. 6. Supranta įvairius buitinės ir akademinės kalbos pokalbius, diskusijas, debatus; paskaitų, konferencijų pranešimų ištraukas, video ir audio įrašuose bei gyvai.
