English C1: Reading and Speaking
Description
The course is designed for students who want to improve communication skills in preparation of academic studies in English and anyone wishing to develop general English language communicative competence. Learners will develop a variety of general English language skills: to discuss and debate on a variety of academic and social topics, to improve accuracy as well as further develop their fluency, to develop an ability to vary register according to the context, to practice in guessing the meaning of unknown words and to develop and accurately deliver presentations. The forms of studies include classroom seminars, self-study tasks, in virtual MOODLE environment (e.g. on-line tasks, discussion forums, interactive exercises).
Aim of the course
To develop communicative language competence that includes linguistic, pragmatic, and sociolinguistic components through the types of reception (listening and reading comprehension), production and interaction (speaking and writing) language activities at the advanced level (C1).
Prerequisites
Competence in English at B2 level.
Course content
Assesment Criteria
A student is able to use grammatical and linguistic structures and active vocabulary of general language corresponding to the C1 level.
A student is able to read, understand, analyze, and critically evaluate texts and articles written in general and academic language.
A student is able to discuss various professional, political, and domestic issues. A student is able to compare and critically evaluate the conditions and motivational factors for choosing teaching/learning, profession, and job in Lithuania and abroad.
A student is able to present a research-type presentation on a topic selected individually, using correct academic language, initiating and maintaining discussion with the teacher and colleagues.
A student is able to write a CV according to European standards, a cover letter, a letter of complaint and a discursive essay.
A student is able to listen to, understand and summarize general and academic language texts from a variety of audio and video recordings.
A student is able to participate in discussions, debates, and conversations on a wide range of educational, cultural, sporting, social, and academic topics, in both general and academic language.
A student is able to use appropriate vocabulary and grammatical forms of expression specific to different language registers.
