English C1: for Intercultural Communication
Description
The course is designed to develop students’ general and academic English language communicative competence at advanced level and intercultural awareness through activities integrating receptive (listening and reading), productive and interactive (speaking and writing), and mediation language skills. The content of the course is based on the topics of intercultural communication, classifications of cultures, culture shock, cultural differences; requirements for the use of in-text citations, links to sources, preparation of reference list; differences between academic and general English; advanced level grammatical and lexical competence development. Various active learning methods are applied: group and pair work, role-plays, simulations, discussions on relevant intercultural topics, study of authentic texts, watching and analyzing video recordings, conducting small-scale research, interpretation and presentation of its findings, preparation, delivery, observation and assessment of presentations on self-chosen topics, project method. The course is delivered in a blended study form integrating face-to-face learning with work in virtual Moodle environment.
Aim of the course
To develop communicative and intercultural competences, which include expanding vocabulary, improving language use through listening and reading comprehension, speaking and writing activities at the advanced level (C1).
Prerequisites
Competence in English at B2 level.
Course content
Assesment Criteria
A student gets acquainted with the theoretical principles of intercultural communication, various typologies of cultural classification, applies them in presenting his own country and its culture, describes the intercultural peculiarities of countries.
A student expresses thought freely and spontaneously by listening to the interlocutor and reacting accordingly, participates in the group discussion, moderates it, draws appropriate conclusions and generalizations.
A student speaks to the audience and presents a clear, structured presentation by introducing a critically analyzed article and systematized data entries, interprets the results of the research and presents a summarized reasoned opinion in visual and oral form.
A student understands advanced language on abstract and complex topics by reading and listening to audio and video recordings, and is able to write down main ideas and examples using abbreviations and symbols without deviating from the original.
A student uses grammatical and linguistic structures appropriate to level C1, active vocabulary of general and academic language, including a wide range of idioms, metaphors, and expressions, with an awareness of register variation.
A student is able to write clear, well-constructed, detailed, persuasive text on complex topics, following appropriate citation style and format, using connectors and linking devices appropriately.
