Deviance, Crime and Social Control

Description

The course aims at introduction of the main concepts and theories of sociology of deviance and criminology and their application in the analysis of the social phenomena. The history of the development of sociology of deviance and criminology are analyzed. Special attention is paid to the societies of Central and Eastern Europe developments in the areas of deviance, crime, and social control in the region. During the course students will prepare sociological analysis and interpretation of the chosen social phenomena of the sociology of deviance and/or criminology and will present the conducted research during the seminar.

The history of the development of sociology of deviance and criminology are analyzed. Assesment Criteria

1. Competence to analyze and apply classical and modern theories of sociology of deviance and criminology for the study of deviance, crime and social control. 2. Competence to critically observe, analyze, and evaluate phenomena of deviance, crime, and social control in contemporary society. 3.Competence to analyze various social problems in the field of sociology of deviance and criminology from the national and global perspective. 4. Competence to develop sociological skills – the ability to plan a sociological research, collect, analyze, and interpret data by using quantitative and qualitative social research methods in the field of sociology of deviance and criminology. 5. Competence to develop the ability to apply secondary data sources in sociological analysis of deviance, crime and social control (statistical information, data sets, etc.).
