Corpus Linguistics
Description
This course focuses on the advantages of using electronic corpora for linguistic analysis and description. It discusses the theoretical and methodological aspects of corpus linguistics, introduces types of corpora and their design, the main principles and methods of corpus analysis, and acquaints with the software used to analyse corpus data. The practical tasks include small-scale projects demonstrating application of corpus tools in teaching languages, translation studies, and register/ genre analysis.

Creation and design of corpora. Representativeness, balance and sampling. Making statistical claims. Raw frequency and normalized frequency. Tests of statistical significance. Tests for significant collocations. Corpus-based and corpus-driven approaches. Types of corpora. Main electronic corpora used for language studies. Building your own corpus. Lexicographic and lexical studies. Corpus studies of grammar and syntax. Register variation and genre analysis. Contrastive and translation studies. Corpora and language teaching. Working with AntConc. Trying out LancsBox (v.5). Multilingual corpora. Working with ParaConc/ AntPConc.
