Chinese Language and Culture (2)

Description

In this level students will learn about 250 new characters and at least 350 new vocabulary words. With words learned in level 1 (which will be incorporated in new texts designated for learning new words) it will be a total of about 600 – 700 vocabulary words and 500 characters. Students will also learn new grammatical constructions, improve their reading, writing and listening skills, as well as learn new forms of dialogue construction and participation in a conversation. Learning material is organized in four major topics consisting of four lessons each. First topic: Activities of Daily Life (the prepositions zai, gei and gen; interrogative and propositional conjunction or; auxiliary verbs xiang, yao and neng; expressing time duration; ordinal numbers; structure zai…ne). Second topic: Seeking for Help (ability defining verbs; structure dui…shuo; giving directions; structure xian...,ranhou...; affirmative-negative question with shi bu shi; expressing permission and prohibition; sentences with two subjects; double-object sentences). Third topic: Illustration and Description (le indicating change; sentences with subject-predicate phrase as predicate; expressing height, weight, size, length; width; comparison structure with geng and zui; additional usages of de-structure; usage of youdianr and yidianr; reduplication of verbs; complement of manner). Fourth topic: Comparison and Tense (comparison using bi; comparison using meiyou; comparison using yiyang; structure yao…le indicating a future event).

Aim of the course

Introduction to the elementary level of Chinese language structures and cultural factors, that have a great impact to learning the language.

Assesment Criteria

Ability to describe the region of East Asia through language and culture. Ability to describe cultural differences between Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Taiwanese. Ability to speak Chinese language at a level corresponding to A2.
