Russian Language A1

Description

The goal of the Russian language Level 1 course is to introduce students to the Cyrillic alphabet and the main orthoepic and orthographic rules of the Russian literary language, teach the usage of pronoun and verb morphological forms, and develop receptive and productive general and specific skills. In addition to that, the course is designed to help students to acquire socio-cultural and communicative competence at elementary level. Students learn to speak about themselves, their family and surroundings, form and answer simple questions, use the orthoepic rules correctly, establish a contact using adequate forms of politeness, listen to and grasp the message of the interlocutor. Students can also present simple information about themselves in written and in oral forms, read adapted texts, translate such texts into Lithuanian and retell their content using uncomplicated speech forms. The form of studies includes lectures, seminars, self-study tasks and work in SANAKO lab and virtual MOODLE environment (on-line work, synchronous and asynchronous conversations and discussion forums, interactive tests and exercises).

Aim of the course

To develop linguistic communicative competence, which includes linguistic, pragmatic and sociolinguistic components through reception (listening and reading comprehension), production and interaction (speaking and writing) and mediation (translation) linguistic activities at the lower level of beginners (A1).

Course content

Topics for developing linguistic communicative competence: 1. The etiquette of greeting and saying goodbye. 2. Introducing oneself and getting acquainted. 3. Presenting information about oneself. 4. Family members. 5. Description of appearance. 6.Professions. 7. Leisure and hobbies. 8. Description of items. 9. Studies. Linguistic topics: 1. Cyrillic alphabet (print and cursive letters). 2. Basic rules of reading in Russian literary language (main intonation construction; rules for writing/pronunciation stressed and unstressed vowels; vowel reduction; rules for pronunciation and writing of vowels after sibilant consonants and “?”; hard, soft, and sibilant consonants; assimilation of consonants; palatalization of consonants; words with silent consonants. 3. Noun (determination of gender, animate/inanimate nouns). 4. Pronoun (personal and possessive pronouns). 5. Types of adjectives. 6. Verb (determination of conjugation, conjugation in Present, Past, and Future tenses). 7. Cardinals (0-100)

Assesment Criteria

1. A student expresses his/her thoughts on the specified topics, argumentatively expresses his/her opinion, and participates in dialogues. 2. A student forms and answers questions on the topics included in the thematic content and improvises dialogues. 3. A student writes and types a text in the Russian language correctly. 4. A student expresses his/her thoughts in writing (writes an essay about himself/herself, his/her family, hobbies; describes things and situations); correctly uses grammatical forms and syntactic structures specified in the linguistic content. 5. A student reads, analyzes, and retells simple (adapted, simple informational) texts, understands an audio recording of about 3 minutes.
