Business Information Systems

Description

Course purpose – the course introduces the concept of information systems, their structure, their role and impact in the modern business environment. It examines the intersection of technology, business processes and decision-making, with an emphasis on how organisations use information systems to achieve strategic objectives and competitive advantage. Key topics include an introduction to information systems structure and planning, enterprise digital transformation processes and modelling, data management, the use of artificial intelligence and IoT technologies, and security principles. Students analyse real cases of information systems and carry out practical projects using computer modelling tools.

Aim of the course

The aim of the course is to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to analyze, plan and manage information systems, that support and enhance business processes and decision-making, and employ modern ICT technologies.

1. Role of information in contemporary society. Data, information, knowledge. 2. Business information systems: definition, structure, role, impact. 3. Classification of business information systems. 4. Integration of information systems and business processes. 5. Digitalization and digital transformation. 6. Formulating digital strategy for an organization. 7. Information systems and cybersecurity. Business process modeling. BPMN – Business Process Modeling and Notation. 8. Technological landscape of modern information systems – database management systems, cloud computing, Internet of Things, data analytics, artificial intelligence. 9. Artificial intelligence in digital transformation processes. 10. Information systems and e-commerce. 11. Digital transformation and information system use cases in different industries. 12. Decentralized transaction management. Decentralized finance (DeFi). Cryptocurrencies and blockchain. Smart contracts.

Assesment Criteria

1. The student explains the role of information systems in supporting decision-making, improving business processes and achieving strategic objectives in a range of areas in at least half of the criteria. 2. The student explains the need, money and possibilities of major digitisation and digital transformation for at least one enterprise case. 3. The student identifies and is able to propose solutions to the main ethical, legal and security challenges related to the use of business information systems in a globalised business environment. 4. The student is able to design a business information system that meets the organisation's objectives and enhances operational efficiency by applying at least half of the aspects of the business information system, after analyzing the case of at least one enterprise. 5. The student will demonstrate the ability to use modern IT tools and technologies such as database management systems, cloud computing, process modelling tools, enterprise resource planning (ERP) software and business analytics and artificial intelligence tools to solve business problems.
