English C1: Professional Communication

Description

The course is designed for students who seek to acquire the English language proficiency level C1 communicating in a professional setting through integrated listening, reading comprehension, speaking and writing activities. The aim is to develop linguistic skills focusing on the appropriate use of English terms and collocations related to career development, to encourage effective communication through different role-play and problem solving activities in business meetings, negotiations, and business telephone conversations adapting the language style to the addressee, asking and responding to questions to demonstrate understanding of the social interaction process and self-presentation skills. The course objectives are achieved by developing argumentative skills through discussions applying the norms of language etiquette and strategies of non-verbal and intercultural communication, providing oral presentation and written commentary of the results from data analysis and visualization. A mixed form of study is applied: work in the classroom, group work, discussions, case studies, work in Moodle virtual environment, independent work in practical application of theoretical material.

Aim of the course

To develop students’ linguistic and communicative competences and knowledge, including the development of subject-specific communicative terminology, the improvement of language use through reading, listening, speaking, and writing activities at the proficient user level (C1) and apply them effectively, ethically and creatively in a professional setting.

Prerequisites

Competence in English at B2 level.

Course content

Assesment Criteria

A student uses English grammatical and syntactic forms and lexical units related to the subject discourse, both orally and in writing at the proficient user level (C1). A student has knowledge of the linguistic discourse of career planning and self-assessment. A student presents a mind map, writes a CV, a cover letter and a resume using the correct terms and collocations related to competences and skills. A student participates effectively in a job interview by asking and answering questions correctly and demonstrating an understanding of self-awareness, the social interaction process and presentation skills. A student has knowledge of linguistic etiquette in the work environment, principles of non-verbal communication and intercultural communication strategies. A student discusses intercultural communication, ethics, and leadership topics, compares differences, designs a questionnaire, carries out a survey and presents the results orally and in writing, using the methodology of reporting and presenting and the principles of reading, analyzing and commenting on visual, written and oral data. A student communicates effectively in different roles and problem-solving roles in business meetings and negotiations by preparing the agenda, chairing, actively participating in questioning, explaining, expressing opinion, correctly using voting language, analyzing the successes and failures of meetings. A student communicates professionally on the phone adapting the language style to the addressee.
