Sound Engineering

Description

The course provides students with an overview of a psychoacoustic aspects of sound engineering in context of digital domain of music production. The main focus of course is devoted to the principles of formation of sound field and its impact on music production practice. The students also will be provided with practical skills of musical mixing within DAW environment to enable the student to deepen their abilities in sound creation. During the course students will develop an awareness of the necessary elements to create an effective portfolio of compositional work with an appropriate design. The module develops the written critical reflection and evaluation skills of the students as well.

To develop knowledge and practice for the application of sound engineering principles in music production.

Course content

Left-right formation practice (Panorama) 5. Sound field. Front-back formation practice (Volume) 6. Sound field. Up-down formation practice (Pitch – EQ) 7. Assignment 1: presentation of teamwork compositions and evaluation discussion 8. Mixing: EQ 9. Mixing: Dynamics 10. Mixing: Delay and Reverb 11. Mixing: Modulation and Harmonizer effects 12. Mixing: Procedure and Mastering 13. Guidelines for Critical Evaluation of Sound Field 14. Documentation: Academic writing (technical log) 15. Assignment 2: presentation of portfolio works and evaluation discussion

Assesment Criteria

Musical structure and material appropriate for the realization of creative concept, fleuncy and unity of composition. Appropriate use of software and hardware, which allows to realize the aims of sound field formation. The precision of production of a work’s sound field. The precision of terms in written text, reference to a context, analytical and evaluative nature of documention. Individuality of a musical work, analysis of preconditions and of realization of a work, effective use of language.
