Religion, Culture and Society

Description

The course aims at introduction to the sociological and anthropological study of religion, its place and role within contemporary cultures and societies. The questions about manifestation of religiosity in contemporary society are approached. Empirical methods applied for the study of religion are analyzed. During the course the types of religious organizations and their adaptation to contemporary society are discussed with a focus on new religions. During the course students will individually and in group prepare sociological or anthropological analysis and interpretation of the chosen religious phenomena and will present the conducted research projects during the seminar.

Assesment Criteria

1. Competently apply classical and modern sociological and anthropological theories for the study of religion. 2. Critically observe, analyze and evaluate contemporary society and its social problems in the sphere of religion. 3. Correctly and competently analyze various social problems in the field of religion from the national and global perspective. 4. Develop a plan for a sociological research, collect, analyze, and interpret data by using quantitative and qualitative social research methods in the field of religion. 5. Competently secondary data sources in sociological analysis of religion. 6. Work in a team, plan and organize personal and group activities, facilitate internal and external communication in a teamwork setting.
