Group Therapy in Social Work
Description
During the course students will focus on studying groups, social interaction in groups, group dynamics, therapy factors in group, mutual aid and group therapy methods. Lectures and group discussions will develop students’ understanding of groups and processes in the group, highlighting the specific features of social work. Student’s practical skills will be developed in workshops. Using the obtained theoretical knowledge students shall prepare and conduct one group work session. During workshops students will share practical experience, discuss successes and failures, and express the ideas on possible group works methods in social work.
Aim of the course
The aims of the course are to introduce the methods of social work with groups emphasizing the dynamics of the group, mutual aid as well as therapeutic aspects of the emerging interactions.
Prerequisites
Introduction to psychology, or any other course giving the basic knowledge in psychology. An introductory course on social work with groups.
Course content
Assesment Criteria
Clearly described group process analyses of task group in the report.
Using at least 2 group work techniques together with the colleague facilitation one group session in a real life situation.
Facilitating the group demonstrates communication and cooperation skills with group, seperate it;s members and co-leader.
Written reflection should present personal experience when facilitating a real group in practice (specifying and discussing the emerging feelings, thoughts, and interactions).
