Sociology and Anthropology of Migration

Description

Classical and contemporary theories of migration are analyzed during the course. These theories will give a possibility to analyze the causes and consequences of local and transnational migration; the impact of global and local development of the society (economic, technological, social, cultural and other) and the national state politics of identity and migration to the forms of migrants binding to the countries of origin and destination – transnationalism, cosmopolitism, ethnic closure, assimilation, integration (involvement), will allow to evaluate their impact to the construction of migrants’ professional, ethnic, national, religious identity, securing of social cohesion and the origin of social conflicts.

Aim of the course

Provide theoretical knowledge that serves as a conceptual lenses for identifying and analyzing social problems related to contemporary processes of migration.

Classical and contemporary theories of migration are analyzed during the course. These theories will give a possibility to analyze the causes and consequences of local and transnational migration; the impact of global and local development of the society (economic, technological, social, cultural and other) and the national state politics of identity and migration to the forms of migrants binding to the countries of origin and destination – transnationalism, cosmopolitism, ethnic closure, assimilation, integration (involvement), will allow to evaluate their impact to the construction of migrants’ professional, ethnic, national, religious identity, securing of social cohesion and the origin of social conflicts.

Assesment Criteria

1. Using practical examples students are able to analyze and illustrate concepts characterizing the phenomena of migration. 2. Students are able to apply a chosen theoretical perspective in analyzing a (chosen or given) concrete research problem related to the phenomenon of migration. 3. Students are knowledgeable about migration laws in different countries and are able to compare them; give examples that illustrate the influence of migration policies on migration flows, patterns, immigrant integration (inclusion) processes, social conflicts. 4. Based on sources of secondary data and completed research data, students are able to identify and analyze immigrant inclusion (integration) and other social problems. 5. Students are to write and carry out a research project directed at migration problems of their choice, interpret and present research results to an audience. 6. Students know and are able to apply essential principals of ethics in carrying out scientific research, analyzing data and publicizing the research results.
