Coaching Psychology

Description

Coaching is a comparatively new but fast growing field emerging mainly at the intersection of counseling, clinical and organizational psychology, relying mainly on the humanistic and strength oriented approaches. Coaching brings together and employs the knowledge about the human growth, goal attainment and change and focuses on working with non-clinical populations in order to trigger the personal and/or professional growth, individual and/or team performance enhancement, physical and/or mental health strengthening etc. The course covers main psychological theories and research serving as the base for coaching theory and practice; most popular practical coaching models and tools; areas where practicing psychologists can use ideas and methods of coaching.

Aim of the course

Provide students with the understanding of the psychological theories and research constituting the theory and practice of coaching, as personal and/or professional growth and development. Introduce students to the practical methods of coaching and areas of their application in the work of a psychologist.

• Defines the coaching, links to other related fields • Explains theoretical background and other political, social, economical circumstances preceding the emergence of coaching profession • Names and compares rules and specificity of legal and professional regulation in Europe, USA and Australia • Explains main requirements for coach’s qualification and professional competencies • Explains main theoretical and empirical premises about a person’s / team’s / group’s strengths sources, their exploration and utilization possibilities • Relying on different theoretical approaches explains the mechanism of positive change at the personal, group, organizational levels • Explains core theoretical principles and aims of the most popular coaching models • Explains the process and phases of the most popular coaching models • Explains the purpose and specificity of the coaching techniques of the most popular coaching models • Provides the analysis of a case, relying on the knowledge about coaching theory and practice • Explains how coaching ideas and methods could broaden the toolkit of a psychologist working in school, health care, organizations settings • Prepares a coaching plan of an individual or group session for a chosen target group
