Language and the Media

Description

This subject discusses the role of language used in various media (newspapers, the radio, television, and the internet), analysing linguistic features, using the principles of discourse analysis. The subject discusses figurative language and the features of netspeak, comparing English and Lithuanian used in medial language. The following topics are discussed: ideology, stereotypes, identity, ethnicity, and subcultures in the media.

Aim of the course

To discuss the features of language which is used in different types of media.

Prerequisites

Discourse analysis.

Course content

The media in today‘s society and its specificity. Ideology, ethnicity, minority groups, subcultures, identity, stereotyping in media. Linguistic and stylistic features of media discourse. Tropes. Internet language. Analysis of genres in different types of media.

Assesment Criteria

1. The ability to use and describe the main terms. 2. The ability to discuss and compare how ideology, minority groups, subcultures, identity and stereotyping are expressed in the media. 3. The ability to recognize, describe and compare the features of the internet language used in the media. 4. The ability to analyze different genres of media from the viewpoint of structure, linguistics and style.
