University Management
Vytautas Magnus University is governed by two collegial bodies, the Council and the Senate, and a sole administrative body, the Rector. The Rector’s advisory body is the Rector’s Council.
Council
The Council is a collegial governing body which, having considered the recommendations of the Senate, approves the University’s vision and mission, the strategic activity plan submitted by the Rector, the procedure of the University Rector’s election through an open competition, and the University’s reorganisation or liquidation plans. It also establishes the procedure for the management, use, and disposal of the University’s financial resources (including resources for staff salaries), considers and approves the plans for the restructuring of the University proposed by the Rector, elects, appoints to office, and dismisses the Rector, secures support for the University, and performs other functions. Senate
The Senate is a collegial body of the University’s academic self-governance, elected for a five-year term and composed of 61 to 71 scientists, established artists, and students. The current Senate was formed for a five-year term on 17 November 2020. Learn more.
Rector
The Rector is the sole governing body of the University, acting on its behalf and representing it. The University Council elects, appoints to office, and dismisses the University Rector through an open competition for a term of five years and for no more than two consecutive terms. The Rector is responsible for ensuring that the University’s activities comply with the law, the University Statute, and other legal acts. The Rector also issues orders, grants incentives to staff and students, is responsible for the University’s financial performance and for the proper management, use, and disposal of its assets, oversees the quality of higher education, research, and cultural and artistic activities, and decides on other matters. In 2025, the University Council elected Prof. Ineta Dabašinskienė as Rector.
Rector’s Council
The Rector’s advisory body is the Rector’s Council. The Rector’s Council consists of the Rector, Vice-Rectors, Deans of Faculties and Heads of equivalent academic units, the President of the Student Representative Council, and Heads of other units appointed by the Rector. The Rector’s Council prepares the University’s long-term development plans, considers issues related to the organisation of studies, research, and economy, prepares the University’s annual activity report, teaching workload norms and other work norms, coordinates and supervises the activities of faculties and other autonomous units, coordinates the University’s relations with Lithuanian and foreign institutions of research, studies, business, industry, and other sectors, and performs other functions.
