Mentor’s programme – for local students

The International Students Mentors Programme at Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) is designed to foster a supportive and inclusive environment for incoming international students. The programme, launched by the VMU International Cooperation Department in 2003, aims to facilitate the integration of international students into the VMU community by providing them with dedicated local mentors.

Goals and Objectives:

  • Facilitating Integration: The primary goal of the Mentor’s Programme is to assist incoming international students in adjusting to life at VMU and in Lithuania. Mentors serve as guides, offering practical advice, cultural insights, and social support to help new students navigate academic and social environments effectively.
  • Promoting Cross-Cultural Understanding: By pairing international students with local mentors, the programme promotes cross-cultural exchange and understanding. Mentors and mentees have the opportunity to learn from each other’s backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, fostering a more inclusive and diverse campus community.
  • Providing Support and Guidance: Mentors play a crucial role in providing support and guidance to incoming international students. They offer assistance with academic matters, campus resources, administrative procedures, and cultural adaptation, helping new students feel welcome and empowered to succeed at VMU.
  • Building Community: The Mentor’s Programme aims to create a sense of belonging and community among international and local students at VMU. Who is VMU mentor?

VMU Mentor is a local (Lithuanian or foreign full-time) student who has motivation, international and intercultural experience, and voluntarily helps the incoming foreign students.

Mentor’s duties

  • Communication and Collaboration: Mentors are expected to communicate and collaborate effectively with other mentors and coordinators from the VMU International Cooperation Department. This includes attending meetings, sharing information, and working as a team to support incoming international students.
  • Information Sharing: Mentors should provide accurate and comprehensive information to incoming international students about various aspects of university life, including academic programs, campus resources, extracurricular activities, and cultural events. They should also be transparent about both positive and challenging aspects of student life at VMU.
  • Problem Solving: Mentors play a key role in helping international students navigate challenges and solve problems effectively. They should respond promptly to students’ inquiries, offer guidance and support, and assist in finding solutions to academic, social, or personal issues as they arise.
  • Responsibility and Care: Mentors are responsible for the well-being and success of their assigned international students. They should take their duties seriously, demonstrating care, empathy, and professionalism in their interactions with mentees. Mentors should prioritize the needs of their students and proactively address any concerns or difficulties they may encounter.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Mentors should demonstrate cultural sensitivity and respect towards international students, recognizing and valuing diversity in backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. They should create an inclusive and welcoming environment where all students feel accepted and supported regardless of their cultural background.
  • Contribution to Programme Improvement: Mentors are encouraged to actively participate in the ongoing improvement and development of the Mentor’s Programme. This includes sharing ideas, providing feedback, and suggesting ways to enhance the effectiveness and impact of the programme in supporting international students.
  • Confidentiality: Mentors must maintain strict confidentiality regarding students’ personal information and any discussions or interactions within the Mentor’s Programme. They should respect the privacy and confidentiality of their mentees and refrain from sharing sensitive information without consent.
  • Understanding Individual Needs: Mentors should recognize that each international student has unique needs and preferences. They should adapt their approach and level of support accordingly, taking into account the individual circumstances and goals of their mentees.

By fulfilling these duties, mentors play a vital role in supporting the successful integration and academic success of incoming international students at Vytautas Magnus University.

Mentors should also understand that each international student has individual needs. Some students might have higher expectations towards the mentor than the others. That is why mentors should not forget that they do not have to:

  • Have all the answers to all possible questions and be an advisor in all the possible matters;
  • Solve all the problems of the assigned international student;
  • Be available 24/7;
  • Do the homework for the international students;
  • Find other living place in case student is unhappy with the life in the dormitory.
