All international students accepted as exchange/visiting or full-time degree students at Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) must check what migration document (visa, certificate, residence permit or none of them) is required to have for the legal entry and residence in Lithuania.

Information About Migration Documents

For FULL-TIME DEGREE students

International FULL-TIME DEGREE students planning the studies at Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) must check TEMPORARY RESIDENCE PERMIT application requirements:

Citizens of EU / EFTA countries may enter Lithuania and stay here for a period not exceeding 3 months without a permit. Citizens of EU / EFTA admitted for full-time degree studies must apply for Temporary Residence Certificate after arrival.

Application Fee - 10 Eur.

Application Documents:

  • Online Application Form (login HERE)
  • Passport (valid for 3 months after the study period) and a copy of it
  • Admission Letter provided by VMU
  • Health Insurance. Note! The document must be in English. 
  • Scholarship Confirmation or Official Bank Account Statement or other financial statement indicating the most recent balance. Each student must have sufficient financial resources of minimum 157 EUR per month. Note! The document must be in English.
  • Lease or loan-for-use agreement relevant for residence place declaration

After the changes in the Law on the Legal Status of Foreigners come into effect on 1 July (2023) national visas are NOT issued to Full-time students coming to study at higher education institutions in Lithuania.

  • Full-time students, coming to study in Lithuania must apply for obtaining a Temporary Residence Permit (TRP), which may be issued for a period of 2 years.
  • A temporary residence permit (TRP) can be obtained in one of the 34 VFS Global centres operating in foreign countries. You can find the list and contacts of VFS Global centres HERE.

List of required application documents

TRP application guidelines

  1. Application form for TRP filled in https://www.migracija.lt/ website.
  2. Passport and passport copy (passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the end of TRP). Note: copies of all pages with stamps or visas are required.
  3. Mediation letter number (provided by VYTAUTAS MAGNUS UNIVERSITY).
  4. Previous visa/TRP copy.
  5. Income/ Bank statement/ Proof of means of subsistence for 1 year: total 6468.00 EUR (at least 462.00 EUR per month and another 924.00 EUR as a guarantee that you will have enough funds to return to your country of origin) in your or your parents bank account (original bank account statements/pay slips, etc. for minimum last 3 months; in case of sponsorship - "Affidavit of Sponsorship" from parents/relatives and their bank account statements for minimum 3 last months).
  6. A digital professional photo.
  7. Non-conviction / Police clearance certificate.
    • It is a certificate from a competent authority of a foreign state where the student lived more than 6 months during the last 2 years before coming to Lithuania, which confirms that the student was not convicted in the corresponding state.
    • The certificate must be legalized: a document is considered legalized only if it is certified twice – in the country that issued the document, and in the country to which the document will be submitted.
    • First, the document must be submitted for approval to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country that issued the document and/or the diplomatic mission or consular post of that country. After that, the document must be approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania or the diplomatic mission or consular office of the Republic of Lithuania. Only then the translated document is suitable for submission to the Migration Department of the Republic of Lithuania for TRP.
    • Legalisation of document is carried out: by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania or diplomatic representations or consular posts of the Republic of Lithuania.
    • The document must be approved by an Apostille (only for citizens of countries acceding to the 1961 Hague Convention). Details: HCCH | #12 - Authorities
    • The document must be translated into English (non-conviction certificate) or Lithuanian (if you had an offense), in case it was issued in some other foreign language.
  8. International travel health insurance for Foreigners Staying in Lithuania, covering one year of staying abroad. Minimum coverage is 30 000.00 EUR.
  9. Commitment to declare the place of residence. You will be required to declare your living place in Lithuania after arrival (no later than 1 month after TRP pick-up). Contract copy of their living place/flat owners’ statement (if renting an apartment)/Document concerning the place of residence in the Republic of Lithuania.

VMU degree students coming from non-EU/EFTA countries (Visa-free regime or possessing Lithuanian D-type Visa) could apply for Temporary Residence Permit after arrival. The application must be submitted not later than 3 months before the expiration date of the visa.

For EXCHANGE/VISITING Students

All EXCHANGE/VISITING students planning studies, research or internship visits at Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) must check the VISA application requirements:

Exchange students - citizens of EU / EFTA countries - may enter Lithuania and stay here for a period not exceeding one academic year without a permit.

All international students planning studies, research visits or internships at VMU for over 90 days must apply for the National (D-Type) Multi-Entry Visa at the nearest VSF Global Office.

The decision about the issuance of visa is usually given in 15-45 working days.

Application Fee - free of charge.

See the list of countries the exchange/visiting students of which are not requested to have a National (D-Type) Multi-Entry Visa to enter Lithuania (visa-free regime). These students can stay in Lithuania for up to 90 days period without a visa. Please note, that in such a case arrival is available without transiting other Schengen area countries (Lithuania must be the first Schengen area country during flight). These students can choose: apply for a visa before arrival or after arrival.

If your country is not on the visa-free regime list, you must apply for a visa before arrival.
