All international students accepted for degree or exchange studies, research visit or internship at Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) should check what migration document (visa, certificate, residence permit or none of them) is required to have for the legal entry and residence in Lithuania.

More Than 90 Days VisitingUp to 90 Days Visiting

All international students planning the studies, research visit or internship at Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) for longer than 90 days period have to apply for one of the migration document (certificate, visa or residence permit) according to the countries they are coming from: EU/EFTA Countries or NON-EU/EFTA Countries.

EU / EFTA countries citizens accepted for more than one academic year studies, research visit or internship at VMU are requested to apply for the Temporary Residence Certificate and to declare the residence place in Lithuania.

How to Apply?

VMU International Cooperation Department will inform you about the application procedure. The Temporary Residence Certificate can be issued in one month after the application submission. You may check all application information HERE.

Application Fee - 8,60 EUR

Application Documents:

  • Passport or ID Card valid 3 months after the study period
  • Health Insurance
  • Student Status Confirmation (provided by VMU Student Affairs Department)
  • Scholarship Confirmation or Official Bank Account Statement or other financial statement indicating the most recent balance. Each student must have sufficient financial resources of 365 EUR per month and the sum of 730 EUR to return to the home country. E. g.: if the student is coming for the study period of 5 months, he/she must have 2555 EUR (365 EUR x 5 months + 730 EUR)
    Note! The document must be in English. 
  • Declaration of Residence Place in Lithuania
  • Accommodation Property Certificate (provided by VMU International Cooperation Department/flat owner)
  • Confirmation of the flat owner (flat owner has to visit Migration Department together with the student or provide the official confirmation certified by the notary or the elder (of the eldership the student lives in)

All international students planning the studies, research visit or internship at VMU for longer than 90 days period must apply for the National D Type Multi-Entry Visa*

How to Apply?

VMU International Cooperation Department will inform you about the application procedure. Please contact the Embassy or Consulate of the Republic of Lithuania in your country or in the nearest one (see the list of countries), register for the appointment, and provide the responsible officer with the required documents.

The decision about the issuance of visa is usually given in 15-30 working days.

Application Fee -  120 Eur

Application Documents:

  • Online Application Form
  • Number of Mediation Letter (provided by VMU International Cooperation Department - valid 1 month)
  • Passport (valid for 3 months after the study period) and a copy of it
  • EU/EFTA Country Residence Permit (if applicable) and a copy of it
  • Health Insurance with Emergency Medical Evacuation and Repatriation Coverage of 30 000 EUR
    Note! The document must be in English.
  • Scholarship Confirmation or Official Bank Account Statement or other financial statement indicating the most recent balance. Each student must have sufficient financial resources of 365 EUR per month and the sum of 730 EUR to return to the home country.   • Photo in colour (size: 35×45 mm) corresponding to your age

* Exception applies to VMU non-degree students who have the Visa-Free entrance possibility (see "Visa After Arrival").

See the list of countries the exchange programmes' students of which are not requested to have a visa to enter Lithuania (visa-free regime) HERE. This rule does not apply to international students accepted to degree studies at VMU. VMU degree students must apply for a visa before arrival (see "Visa Before Arrival").

Exchange students of non-EU/EFTA countries, who are not requested to have a visa to enter Lithuania, have to decide whether to apply for the National D Type Multi-Entry Visa before the arrival or right after it.

Exchange students holding EU / EFTA country residence permits also may decide whether to apply for a visa before arrival or in 5 days after arrival.

  • Online Application Form
  • Number of Mediation Letter (provided by VMU International Cooperation Department - valid 1 month)
  • Passport (valid for 3 months after the study period) and a copy of it
  • EU/EFTA Country Residence Permit (if applicable) and a copy of it
  • Health Insurance with Emergency Medical Evacuation and Repatriation Coverage of 30 000 EUR

All VMU degree students coming from non-EU/EFTA countries have to apply for Temporary Residence Permit after arrival. Application must be submitted not later than 5 months before expiration date of the visa.

International students planning the studies, research visit or internship at Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) for shorter than 90 days period have to check if they need to apply for a visa according to the countries they are coming from: EU/EFTA Countries or NON-EU/EFTA Countries.

Citizens of EU / EFTA countries may enter Lithuania and stay here for a period not exceeding one academic year.

Other countries' citizens visiting Vytautas Magnus University for the period of up to 90 days must apply for the Schengen Visa before arrival.
