The Embassy of Romania to the Republic of Lithuania and Vytautas Magnus University have the pleasure to invite you to the opening of the exhibition "Images of Diversity": an artistic collection by 34 Romanian painters, photographers, sculptors and graphic artists, coming from 21 ethnic minority groups. The exhibition proposes a visual journey into the beauty of diversity, seen through artistic lenses.

VMU library enriched with new books about Latvia

In 2021 marking the centenary of Latvia’s state recognition de jure, the National Library of Latvia donated to Vytautas Magnus University a collection of books representing Latvian history, art, literature, ethnic and contemporary culture. The books are published in English, so their content will be available to a wide range of readers.

Human Rights Activists Are Being Locked Up in Psychiatric Hospitals

Have you shared a picture online mocking the authorities? Your bank account may be frozen and the court may order to place you in a psychiatric hospital. According to a report published by the foundation Human Rights in Mental Health (FGIP), such methods of silencing political opponents, religious believers, human rights activists and dissidents are still employed by the Russian authorities to this day, continuing the practices that began during the Soviet era. One of the authors of the report, Chief Executive of FGIP, Professor Robert van Voren of Vytautas Magnus University (VMU), says that psychiatry is a convenient cover for repressions against the critics of the authorities.

“Comfort Women: past, present & challenges of reconciliation”

VMU Centre for Asian Studies invites you to a series of events dedicated to the memory of “comfort women”. The problem of “comfort women” remains relevant to this day and affects international relations in East Asia. Japan views this question as resolved, meanwhile South Korea is seeking redress and a formal apology from Japan. We would like to invite you to broaden your horizons on this topic and join the discussion by participating in a series of three events on three Fridays: October 22nd, 29th and November 5th.

The Rīga Conference 2021 takes place on the 15th and 16th of October

The annual security and foreign policy forum The Rīga Conference 2021 will take place on October 15 – 16. This year the event will gather participants both in-person at the National Library of Latvia and online. Its participants will have the opportunity to hear from the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, as well as the Prime Minister of Estonia Kaja Kallas, and the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis. The conference will be broadcasted live on www.rigaconference.lv and other social media platforms.
