VMU art gallery 101 is an academic gallery seeking to become one of the cultural hot spots in Kaunas and Vytautas Magnus University. Its activities and events are significant contributions to the intellectual life of the academic community, as well as the city. Educational projects and exhibitions presenting cultural and historical context of art, lectures and film viewings are just a few of examples how the gallery promotes critical dialogue and interdisciplinary interpretation of art and culture.
The gallery gives higher priority to contextual exhibitions and interdisciplinary projects, followed by public scientific lectures and discussions. Wide cultural-scientific discourse and multi-layered narratives are formed, as the projects seek to involve specialists, researchers and students representing different disciplines of the Faculty of Arts (fine arts, architecture, theatre, photography, cultural heritage, art of movement, cinema, etc), different VMU faculties and other cultural and scientific establishments. The gallery is expected to be an incentive for the students to band together into an academic club, organizing lectures, movie nights, exhibition projects, discussions on scientific issues, etc.
Gallery projects
Gallery 101 offers historical exhibitions, which present a wide cultural and social context. They are supervised by historians of art and culture, sharing a connection to the scientific research conducted by VMU and its Faculty of Arts.
Further activities of the gallery include projects which introduce contemporary creators and the latest phenomena of art and culture, public lectures, seminars, conferences, movie nights and other events of fine arts, architecture, theatre, dance and other forms of modern art and culture. An important part of the gallery’s activities is inter-institutional projects, such as the joint exhibitions of students and lecturers at the Faculty of Arts and Kaunas Art Institute of the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts. Student participation is encouraged through practical studies of specific subjects and voluntary assistance in event organization.
Other than project presentations, Gallery 101 also organizes small-scale events: presentations of books and other publications, seminars, public lectures, film viewings, student project presentations, etc.
