Call for Presentations: International Symposium on Japonology within Asian Studies

The Centre for Asian Studies invites to participate at the International Symposium Japanology within Asian Studies in Lithuania: Historical Perspective and Present Situation, which will take place on 3-4 November in Kaunas. Its purpose is to present, discuss and evaluate the situation of Asian studies in Lithuania.

Specialists representing different fields of Asian studies, including Indian, Chinese, Middle East, Korean, Japanese and general Oriental studies, are invited to participate. The symposium is organized on the occasion of the 10-year anniversary since the inception of the Centre for Asian Studies in Vytautas Magnus University.

The tentative list of sections is the following:

  1. General Area studies, Oriental studies
  2. Middle East studies in Lithuania
  3. South Asian (Indian) studies in Lithuania
  4. Chinese and Korean studies in Lithuania
  5. Japanese studies in Lithuania

The topics and abstracts of presentations should be sent by e-mail to conference@asc.vdu.lt until 9 October.

Language of presentations is Lithuanian or English. Invited guest speakers will share their experiences abroad, especially in Latvia and Estonia. A special guest speaker Dr. Eiko Sakurai, the author of the first Lithuanian language learning textbook in Japanese, is invited to present the situation of Lithuanian studies in Japan. Moreover, Dr. Masaaki Shiraishi, a prominent researcher of Chiune Sugihara, will deliver a lecture on Lithuania-Japan diplomatic relationships.

"We hope that the symposium of Asian studies will be a friendly gathering of several Lithuanian orientalist generations and an exchange of experiences, a pleasant conversation. This would be a great opportunity to once again review the 20 years of independence and evaluate where we are, what has been achieved and what should be achieved", the Head of the Centre for Asian Studies dr. Aurelijus Zykas said.
