VMU Rector’s Greetings to the Community on the 1st of September

Dear community of Vytautas Magnus University,
Throughout the year there are certain dates that are significant for everyone. Undoubtedly, 1 September is one of them. Both for the youngest, who are excitedly entering a new stage of life – kindergarten, or first grade, and for those who are now only reminiscing about all their past Knowledge Days. The University opens its doors to numerous first-year students, while for others, September 1st marks the start of their last year of studies.
It is gratifying to note that Vytautas Magnus University remains among the leaders in Lithuania in terms of the number of new bachelor and integrated studies students admitted to universities this year – the second largest University in Lithuania in terms of the number of students has welcomed 1,281 first-year bachelor and integrated studies students. VMU also ranks second among the country’s universities in terms of the total number of students admitted.
While the number of students enrolling in higher education institutions in Lithuania is decreasing, Vytautas Magnus University has, in fact, been able to increase the number of students. This proves that VMU has secured its status as a trustworthy institution conducting high-quality studies, which further obliges us to work hard and achieve our set goals. I thank you for your choice and I have no doubt that you will not regret it – it will be a stepping stone on your chosen path in life, where new acquaintances as well as valuable knowledge and experiences will be woven together in a beautiful mosaic.
As we celebrate the centennial of the University of Lithuania this year, we start the new academic year with even broader opportunities and perspectives. The historical agreement signed between Kaunas universities will allow the exchange of scientific and technological information, joint development and implementation of research and other projects, joint development of scientific production, and participation in scientific and other events with even greater vigour.
We are glad that this step will accelerate the dissemination of science and new technologies in society and strengthen the city’s academic community and the image of Kaunas as an international student city.
Congratulating you, I wish you unfailing enthusiasm, curiosity, and openness. Openness to new ideas and emerging challenges. I sincerely wish the entire academic community to take advantage of the opportunities that are opening up – to take part in exchange programmes, to expand your knowledge in a multitude of projects, and to get involved in initiatives that educate and provide added value to you and those around you. All of our contributions are important when the work and tasks are carried out with love and enthusiasm. When we think and act sensitively, responsibly, and with a broader and deeper perspective.
I wish you all a very happy new academic year and its beautiful beginning – Knowledge Day!
Rector of Vytautas Magnus University Prof. Juozas Augutis
