VMU Rector’s Greetings to the Community on the 11th of March

142

Dear members of Vytautas Magnus University‘s community,

Sometimes, belonging can be a meaningful goal. Belonging to a group, to a community of likeminded people, to what you believe in and what brings you fulfilment. It is vitally important. However, at times, being independent is the greatest bliss and the highest goal. Not belonging or depending on something, but being free to decide; not obeying, but retaining our rights, and the possibility to choose. This is what we are celebrating today.

For thirty-one years, we have been counting the moments of our independence and growing steadily each year, creating, striving for more, and proudly raising our flag high. Building upon our historical memory, drawing on our experiences and past achievements of bold goals, we are moving forward. May these steps be based on the true values. May they be judicious and unaffected by ephemerality or the glitz of the moment.

I am glad that Vytautas Magnus University, which was revived along with the independence of Lithuania, has been growing strong too. Inspired by the desire for freedom and re-opened amid the turmoil of our struggle for independence, it has become the space for the freedom of creativity, freedom of thought, and freedom of speech. It is the place where the future of Lithuania is built.

May inspiration and high spirits follow you wherever you go. Happy Day of Restoration of Independence of Lithuania!

Sincerely,
VMU Rector Juozas Augutis
