The VMU library aims to create and develop favorable informational environment for studies and research, granting effective high quality services to the members of the university community. The library collects, organizes and stores information resources in accordance to the profile of the university. The library organizes convenient and user friendly information infrastructure based on new technologies. VMU library contributes significantly to the development of its users’ information literacy and performs analysis of their needs, seeking to ensure successful results of their learning, research activities and vocational development.
The library also facilitates and promotes vocational development of library staff, increases employees’ competences and skills satisfying needs and expectations of the users. Some of the library activities include participation in projects and collaboration with various organizations.
The area of the library takes up 3 181,44 sq. m., with the staff consisting of 38 employees. All processes of library activities are automated – integral library information system ALEPH 500 (ExLibris, Israel; from 1996 to 1999 library system CICERO from Dantek, Denmark was used) is operating here since 1999.
Information Resources
The library information resources are acquired according to the needs of the academic community, university study programs and research fields.
The library holds over 387 000 printed and other kinds of documents, about 17 000 – 18 000 of which are newly acquired every year. Over a half of the documents in the library are available at the open shelves in the reading rooms.
The university community has access to 52 licensed databases which provide over 765 000 electronic documents, comprised of e-books and full-text journals, etc.
Services
The library’s services are provided to more than 7 000 users in 6 library departments with 545 workplaces (187 of them computerised). Resources and services are provided not only in physical space, but in virtual environment too.
The electronic resources and services as a whole can be described as an electronic library, which comprises of library information system, electronic catalogs and databases created in its environment, information retrieval system, library website, licensed, trial and open access databases, digitalization of university students’ and researchers’ works, internet links sorted according to research and study fields, information literacy of the users, virtual exhibitions, usage of new information technologies, etc.
Participation
The library also participates in the activities of organizations, programs, projects. This helps to deal with the issues of maintenance and development of the library information system, apply information technologies, improve and expand library services, increase the tangibles of the library and acquire electronic resources at lower prices, improve the qualification of the employees, etc.
