In 1968, he obtained a qualification in electrical engineering, specialising in automation and telemechanics, from Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (now Kaunas University of Technology). Deciding to specialise in the field of technical cybernetics and information theory, in 1972 he defended his candidate dissertation in technical sciences titled “Analysis of Some Identification Problems of Dynamic Objects”, and in 1983 he defended his doctoral thesis titled “Dynamic System Structure and Parameter Identification via Discrete-Time Observations – Theory and Methods.” In 1984, he was awarded the academic title of Professor, which, together with the degree of Habilitated Doctor of Mathematics, was nostrified in 1993.

From 1968 to 1984 he worked as a Research Officer at the Adaptive Systems Laboratory of the Institute for Physical and Technological Problems of Energy (now the Lithuanian Energy Institute) of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, and later as the Head of the Adaptive Systems Laboratory Sector. From 1984 to 1989, he was the Head of the Systems Identification and Control Laboratory at the Institute. In 1989, he joined Vytautas Magnus University, where, after a year as the Director of the Research Centre “Informatika”, he became Vice-Rector for Research and Dean of the Faculty of Informatics. In 1996, he was elected Rector of VMU and held this position for two consecutive terms. From 2007 onwards, he assumed the role of the Head of the Department of System Analysis at the VMU Faculty of Informatics.
