This event marks the end of the 16 days of activism raising awareness on the new and emerging forms of CVAWG. Building better #SafeSpaces online and offline supports the annual Orange the World initiative on ending gender-based violence through 16 days of activism.
About the documentary
73% of women in the world have suffered cyber violence. Through their film, ‘#Salepute’, journalists Florence Hainaut and Myriam Leroy tell viewers an international story of cyber harassment that is both intimate and political. From Finland to Switzerland through Austria, France and Germany, the film focuses on the personal and societal consequences of online misogyny and explores individual and collective responses to such abuse.
Why this topic is important
CVAWG is deeply rooted in the social inequality between women and men that persists in our world. As digital (online) and face-to-face (offline) spaces become more and more integrated, CVAWG often amplifies (or is a precursor for) violence and victimisation in the physical world. While cyber violence against women and girls is not new, it is evolving. Because life online is as real as life offline. It’s time to foster safer spaces. We have a right to feel comfortable, safe and secure. Both online and offline.
VMU values and the SPEAR project
Vytautas Magnus University strives to create a safe, healthy, inclusive environment based on respect, attention and tolerance. This higher education institution aims to ensure equal opportunities for all members of the community, to improve not only the quality and results of research and studies, but also enhance working and studying conditions. At Vytautas Magnus University we do not tolerate any (physical, psychological, emotional) violence. Special attention is paid to ensuring gender equality. VMU is one of many European universities taking part in SPEAR project. VMU project team – Prof. dr. Natalija Mažeikienė and Equal Opportunities Coordinator Laura Lapinskė – prepared the Gender Equality Plan, which was approved by the VMU Senate in 2021. Currently, the Guidelines of sexual harassment and gender-based violence prevention is being prepared at the university, which is an important step towards ensuring a safe work and study environment that reflects the values of VMU.
