Science Fiction Literature of the 20th Century

This is a survey course, covering western Science Fiction, from Wells and Verne to modern day authors with a focus on the "golden age" of the 30s through the 70s. We will be looking at both novels and short pieces. There will be a considerable amount of reading required for this class. Authors of longer works may include Robert Heinlein, Frank Herbert, William Gibson, Alfred Bester, Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, George Orwell, Ira Levin, Ursula K. Leguin, Madeleine L’Engle. We will look at the literature through several lenses, but mostly as a product of its time, associating the writings with the time they were written. Classes will consist of lecture and discussion of assigned readings.

Dalykas yra skirtas susipažinti su Vakarų mokslinės fantastikos literatūros klasika, pradedant nuo Wellso ir Verno iki šių dienų, didžiausią dėmesį skiriant “aukso amžiaus” mokslinės fantastikos kūriniams ir jų autoriams, tokiems kaip: Robert Heinlein, Frank Herbert, William Gibson, Alfred Bester, Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, George Orwell, Ira Levin, Ursula K. Le Guin, Madeleine L’Engle. Pristatant reikšmingiausius XX a. mokslinės fantastikos kūrinius, studentai bus skatinami įvertinti ir atpažinti kūrinio sukūrimo laikmečio ženklus. Paskaitų metu vyks interaktyvios diskusijos, pristatymai, aptarimai, remiantis skaitytais autoriais.Dalyko studijos valandomis
Contact hours: lectures – 30 hours, practical work in groups – 15 hours, individual students work – 30 hours, self preparation for seminars, midterm and final exams – 45 hours. Total: 120 hours.Studijų rezultatų vertinimas
