Social Remittances of (Re)Migrants for Society Welfare Growth

439

On Thursday 9 December, 5 p.m., a research presentation and discussion titled Social Remittances of (Re)Migrants for Society Welfare Growth will be held online. During the event, research will be presented which explores how (re)migrants – people who departed from the country after the 90s and have higher education – “give back” to their homeland. The study was conducted by the scholars at Vytautas Magnus University and Social Innovations Institute in Lithuania along with colleagues in Croatia, Poland, and the UK. Those wishing to participate are invited to register online.

The process examined in the research is described as “social remittances”: it is understood as knowledge, initiatives, values, attitudes, experiences, and social networks enacted by (re)migrants to be transmitted and implemented in their home/departure countries.

Among other things, the research revealed that the returnees have a transformative impact on public and private sphere, where they change the conservative thinking of their relatives, friends  and colleagues  by transferring democratic values and civic culture from the Western countries in terms of human rights, work culture and environment protection.

The research was conducted in Lithuania, Poland, and Croatia. It also explores:

  • (re)migrants’ civic & political contribution
  • social media effects on return migration
  • (re)migrants’ moral economy and ambition for the betterment

The research presentation will be held on Thursday 9 December, 5 p.m., on Zoom. The planned duration of the event is 1.5 hours. The language of the event is English.

Those who wish to participate are requested to register online. The registered participants will receive a link to the event. More information is provided by email at info@lithuanianleaders.org.
