Prof. Stefano Bianchini

Stefano Bianchini is a Professor at the University of Bologna (Italy), where he teaches East European Politics and History at the Department of Political and Social Science. From 2015 to 2021, he served as the Rector’s delegate for relations with Eastern Europe.

From 2004 to 2015, he coordinated the joint international Master’s programme MIREES (Interdisciplinary Research and Studies on Eastern Europe), run by VMU, the University of Bologna, St Petersburg University, and the Corvinus University of Budapest.

Prof. Bianchini is an expert on Balkan issues, particularly the politics of Yugoslavia and its successor states, contemporary history, and international relations. He has also served as an advisor to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in the Hague.

He has published books and articles in Italian, French, English, and other languages. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the English Series on the Balkan and East-Central Europe (Longo Publ., Ravenna) and the Executive Editor of Southeastern Europe (Brill, Leiden). In 2017, his book Liquid Nationalism and State Partitions in Europe (Edward Elgar) was published.

Professor Bianchini of the University of Bologna has been awarded the title of VMU Honorary Doctor in recognition of his significant contribution to developing international university cooperation and studies on the politics and history of Eastern Europe and the Baltic region.
