Abstract
This paper presents the long-term (1987-2010) measurements of the biogenic compounds (nitrogen and phosphorus) fluctuation in flood water flowing through meadows of the lower Nemunas and estimate the effect of this fluctuation on the Curonian Lagoon in the environmental aspect. Water samples were taken by 4 repetitions during the flood, before its inflow into and outflow from meadows, on the 1st-3rd-6th-12th days of the flood. In the lower Nemunas, the concentration of biogenic compounds in incoming and outgoing flood waters depended on the flood duration, the soil of study area, and the elevation of land surface. In flood water, the highest amounts of total nitrogen (3.3-19.6 mg/L), nitrates (3.3–1.6 mg/L), ammonium (0.87–0.33 mg/L), phosphates (0.13-0.42 mg/L) and the least amounts of nitrites (0.026–0.020 mg/L) were determined. The highest concentration of researched ions was observed on the first day of flood, and it gradually declined on the third, sixth, and twelfth day. Nitrate concentration was greater in water flowing in meadows during the whole flood in the Nemunas higher floodplain than in lower and in the Minija floodplain, and on the twelfth day of flood, it was less in the lower area of Nemunas floodplain than in the Minija. Total nitrogen concentration was greater in the Nemunas up to the sixth day of flood, and on the twelfth day of flood, it was greater in the Minija water. In the course of flood, the ratio of inorganic and organic nitrogen has changed. During the continuance of the flood, the amount of organic nitrogen has particularly increased when flowing out of meadows in the lower Nemunas valley. On the first day of the flood, the water flowing into meadows in the Nemunas had more phosphates (0.25 mg/L) than in the Minija (0.17 mg/L), and from the third day of the flood on, the concentration (0.14 mg/L) became equalized in all study area.
