Abstract
Juozas Gabrys-Paršaitis was born in Garliava, in 1880. In the history of Lithuanian culture he emerges as a real fighter for democratic rights of the nation. Survival of the Lithuanian nation, language and culture was the most important goal of his life. Already in his youth he joined the ranks of the banned press distributors; later he became an active creator and co-worker of this press and even a resistance fighter with a weapon in his hands. In 1896, Gabrys-Paršaitis organized a secret circle of Marijampolė Secondary School pupils, who distributed the banned Lithuanian publications: “Varpas” (Bell), “Ūkininkas” (Farmer), “Tėvynės sargas” (Homeland guardian) and Lithuanian books brought from Tilsit. Already at that time Gabrys-Paršaitis was one of “Varpas” and “Ūkininkas” co- workers and editors. In 1905, he participated in the resistance to the Tsarist government actions, later became the secretary of the Great Seimas of Vilnius. Attitudes of a patriotic personality undoubtedly were shaped by his childhood and native Garliava environment in which in the end of the 19th century members “Aušra” (Dawn) patriotic organization and book smugglers were very active. A significant stage of Gabrys-Paršaitis’ life begins when he comes to France to study at the Sorbonne University and continues it after completion of studies. In France he began to play an active role as a politician: entered into important diplomatic relations, wrote a lot of publicistic articles about Lithuanian history and the present in representative social and cultural publications. He also edited the magazine “Annales des Nationalites” which published informative and educational articles about Lithuanian history and culture and was particularly significant as destroying an information blockade on our land, subjugated by the tsarist Russia.[...]
Juozas Gabrys-Paršaitis gimė 1880 m. Garliavoje. J. Gabrio g.). Susituokęs su mylima mergina, Kazimieras Paršaitis įsikūrė tėviškėje. Šeima nebuvo pasiturinti, tačiau laikėsi tradicinių papročių ir įskiepijo vaikams didelę meilę gimtajai žemei, lietuvių kalbai, namams. Mažos lietuviškos gryčiutės įvaizdis liko vienas svarbiausių Juozo Gabrio-Paršaičio apsakymėliuose, gyvai iškilo prisiminimuose.
