The article is based on quantitative research conducted by the Centre of Social Anthropology at Vytautas Magnus University in the spring of 2006. The main aim of the article is to answer the questions what people think while talking about "being Lithuanian" or, in other words, what it means "to be Lithuanian"; also, it seeks to identify the main features / markers of the Lithuanian national identity, to describe the changing concept of "Lithuanian-non-Lithuanian," also the respondents' point of view on emigration & the possibilities of non-Lithuanian background people to become Lithuanian. The theoretical framework of the article is based on the deconstructivist paradigm where the dichotomy of national identity, categorized as "ethnic" or "civic," is criticized, & an alternative of identity realization as "open" or "closed" is proposed instead.
