Currently there is observed certain interest in plant raw materials as renewable resources for different industries, especially medicinal plants as renewable raw materials or supplements for pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food industries. On the other hand there is a need for efficient analytical methods which could determine a quantitative and qualitative composition of the medicinal plants raw materials. Flavonoids are secondary metabolites biosynthesiszed in plants, which are actively studied since 1940 for their antioxidant activity and positive effects on living organisms and treatment or prevention of different diseases. Capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) is one of the modern instrumental analysis methods, which is characterized, as high separation efficiency, short analysis time, low sample and electrolyte consumption and low cost method. In this study we report optimization of CZE methodic for quantitative and qualitative analysis of flavonoids in the raw material of medicinal plant Potentilla fruticosa (leaves and blossoms) extracts, grown in the collection of medicinal plants of Kaunas Botanical Garden of Vytautas Magnus University (Lithuania). Influence of ionic strength, buffer pH, organic modifier additive, voltage and temperature on separation efficiency, resolution and precision was evaluated. Optimal separation was obtained using 50mM Na2B4O7, pH 9 buffer, 27 kV voltage at 25 oC temperature. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of flavonoids was performed using CZE method. The extraction of flavonoids of raw materials is the first step involved in their analysis. The extragent polarity has significant effect on the quantitative composition of extracts. Maximum concentration of flavonoids was obtained using 70% aqueous methanol. An optimum extraction time was 1 hour. Quantitative and qualitative distribution of flavonoids in plant depends on vegetation perioden
