Samogitian Calvary Hills is the Way of the Cross made of 20 sites, 19 stations in 19 chapels in the premises of Žemaičių Kalvarija town. „Samogitian Calvary Hills“ is also the title used for a prayer book dedicated to walking the stations. This prayer book is used in Samogitia during the Good Friday and Saturday in churches and during funeral and commemoration of the deceased at home. There are several monographs written and several scientific sources published, dozens of scientific articles publicized about the Way of the Cross in Žemaičių Kalvarija, the history, art and devotion of its chapels, but there are no research on the Hills prayer book except for a few scientific works. “Hills” is a term used by Lithuanian Catholic Church clergy and editors of Samogitian folklore and religious books describing religious practice; it has derived from the title „Rozančius <...>. Teypogi spasabas apwaykściojima Kalnu Kalwaryjos Ziamayciu Su Modlitwomis yr Giesmiemis anto słužijęćiomis“ of the first edition prayer book published by Dominican monk Jurgis Kasakauskis in 1681. Afterwards Hills prayers and hymns were included in later prayer books. This continued until the declaration of the provisions of the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965). On 10 February 1965, Lithuanian bishops and clergymen of dioceses assigned the Liturgical commission, in accordance with the documents of the Second Vatican Council, to prepare liturgical prayer book, which would include Hills prayers named as „19 station Way of the Cross (Hills)“. This liturgical prayer book was approved by the College of Lithuanian diocesan ordinaries on 12 November 1966, and on 4 March 1967 it was approved by the Council for the Implementation of Liturgical Constitution of the Second Vatican Council. In 1968 the first liturgical prayer book was published which included Hills prayers named: “19 station Way of the Cross (Hills)”. [...]
