Abstract
Paper focuses on the patterns of disruptive and sustaining innovations in the context of challenges posed to the incumbent firms by Fintech startups in the financial service sector and retail banking services in particular. It reveals the key trends of Fintech-induced disruption in the banking sector, the main catalysts behind the Fintech disruption and the areas of the retail banking sector that are more susceptible to disruptive vs. sustaining innovations. Paper also presents a discussion regarding the impact of Fintech on three core businesses of the incumbent banks – infrastructure business, customer relationship business and product innovation business. The Fintech-related disruptive innovations have greatest potential in the areas, which are outside the core competencies of banks and are difficult to assimilate into the existing architecture of the banking business. The repertoire of incumbent bank strategies for addressing the challenges of Fintech innovation is given special consideration.
