Abstract
It means that Warsaw's, Krakow's and Poznan's Poland was outside me while getting my first impressions and feelings. Milosz's journey, which started at the beginning of the previous century, has no limits in "Roadside Doggy". "Two horses driven carriage" goes without obstructions, penetrates deeply into the mind, and reaches the farthest neighbourhoods. It is a kind of account with one's past according to the idea that "man without memory is nearly dead and represents the inferior part of humanity.".
After being printed in 1997 "Roadside Doggy" got the Nike Literary Award in 1998. The review said that "The latest book by Milosz became one of the best among the books the author has written. The book is written according to Milosz's conception of "search for capacity in forms". The book consists of new verses in form of metaphysical meditation, memories, theological mini treatise, considerations about Poet's long life and his creation. Anna Legezynska writes about the book: "This collection reminds a drawer, where one can find everything: old papers with new notes, philosophical essays, notes which are related not to literature but to lyrical and micro-epical forms. The author presents two perspectives of narration: the first and third person narration, which creates the atmosphere of irony and confession common for Milosz's works. In the first text of the collection Milosz writes: "I set off to get acquainted with my land by a two horses driven carriage taking a lot of forage and a bucket hanging at the back of the carriage. It was at the beginning of the century. Now the end has approached." The author often uses the opposition "now and at that time". As a traveller he registers facts and phenomena. In "Search for Motherland" the author claims: "It is impossible not to turn back to the past, to the land of your ancestors, language and family. There the treasure dearer than all the wealth measured by money is left. In this treasure colours, forms, details of architecture, everything that had influenced us in the childhood, is hidden". In "Roadside Doggy" Milosz remembers episodes from his life in Vilnius, which is a proof of his special point of view: "It is obvious that my point of view is different. It might by influenced by the fact that I was born in Vilnius, not in Poland, and that I considered Poland's reality from Vilnius perspective.
